Marble is a metamorphic rock with a Mohs hardness scale rating of 3, meaning it’s a softer and more porous rock. Marble is formed from limestone that has been altered through a process called metamorphism. Extreme heat and pressure deep underground cause the minerals in the limestone to enlarge and fuse together, creating a new stone called marble. This process also creates the bands that cut through marble. These bands are often slate.

Use cleaning products designed specifically for natural stone. Do not use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or acidic/alkaline cleaning products (think lemon, vinegar, bleach, ammonia) as these can etch or scratch the surface. You need to be aware that marble, limestone, onyx, and travertine are calcium carbonate and very reactive to acidic solutions. There is always a possibility of scratching and staining these stones.
